The sitter wears an embroidered gown, translucent pale-blue shawl, and a broad feather-trimmed hat. Her softly modeled features and richly detailed costume reflect the romantic historicism popular in late nineteenth-century European portraiture. Presented in an ornate dark-finished frame decorated with scrolling foliate relief and gilt highlights. Marks: No artist signature is visible. A horizontal line of cracking or surface disturbance crosses the upper torso and neck. Canvas appears to have been subsequently re-stretched or otherwise secured with later staples. Frame has scattered chips, rubbing, abrasions, and losses to the dark and gilt finishes. Professional examination and conservation are recommended.
