Bidspirit auction | Federal Giltwood Tabernacle Mirror, first
Federal Giltwood Tabernacle Mirror, first quarter 19th century - An exceptional American Federal mirror in the tabernacle form, featuring a projecting molded cornice with applied ball decoration above a carved tablet centered with a fruit basket and foliate motif, flanked by turned and ringed columns over a rectangular looking glass. The architectural “tabernacle” structure, echoing classical case furniture and door surrounds, is clearly expressed in the stepped crest and columnar supports. Retains a rich, bright gilt surface with strong visual presence and crisp carving throughout. A fine and highly decorative example of early American neoclassical design, measuring 43.5 in. H, 25.5 in. W, 5 in. D. Condition: Very good overall condition with minor wear to gilding, light surface abrasions, and expected age-related imperfections
