'Sasson and Joy in All the Country, Hebrew State Free Immigration' - the Personal diary of the journalist Yona Cohen in the year 1947-8


Personal diary Handwritten by the journalist and author Yona Cohen on pages of a calendar for 1947-8. In the diary, Cohen describes the historical events of the year 1948 when they occurred. In his descriptions, Cohen refers to both policy and daily occurrences, including alarms in Israeli cities, Arab attacks, 29th November celebrations, the capture of Etzel and Lehi people, and more.The diary before us will later become a source for Cohen's book 'Jerusalem under siege'. A chilling, historic document, and most importantly.


We find in the diary pages: On September 28, 1947, Cohen wrote: "Illegal immigrants being deported to Cyprus, a Jew was killed by the soldiers". The following day, he wrote: 'An alarm in Jerusalem bombed without damage in the Rehavia security zone.' On October 17, Cohen describes the bombing of the Irgun, as well as the visit of the High Commissioner in the Galilee, numerous false alarms, a bomb in the US Consulate, Henry Wallace at the Western Wall, a verdict of a three from Saul Hill - 10 years for Cohen and Golan, attacks by Arabs in various places, Jewish Shalom Gurevich was killed, on November 18 Cohen writes in his diary: "Murder of 5 children and girls in Raanana by soldiers, curfew in Jerusalem, shooting on Saturday night, night shooting on our home Hagai 23".


on November 28 Cohen writes: "Tonight We waited for the UN resolution". On November 29, he wrote: "On Saturday night at 12:30 UN resolution 33 was announced for the partition and establishment of a Jewish state, 12 against", and continues to describe the celebrations: "At 2 am I returned from Shimon the Tzaddik, Jerusalem - a bustling city full of joy, drinking 'for life', Dancing, jumping on armored cars, Sasson and Joy all over the country, Hebrew country Free immigration"  The next day he describes "7 Jews were murdered en route to Tel Aviv near Lod The Threats of the Arabs."

Cohen describes his work as a journalist during the fateful days: "The Hatzofeh Jerusalem, a special issue. I worked all night and published in the print of Eretz Israel" and describes the ongoing events:" Deaths in Tel Aviv, In Haifa, stones are strewn all over the houses'. At the end of the diary are various lists, including Cohen's handwriting.


Jonah Cohen [1920 - 1996] Journalist, author, and envoy of national institutions on education and immigration to the countries of Syria, Iran, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and various European countries. Born in northern Iraq, in a small village near the capital of Nineveh - Mosul. When he was about six months old, his family immigrated to Israel, settling in the Nahalat Shimon neighborhood of Jerusalem. Cohen was educated and studied in the 'Mizrahi' Torah Talmud, and at the Porat Yosef Yeshiva. With the founding of the Bnei Akiva movement, Cohen joined Yehiel Eliash and served as one of the first instructors. When he was about 18, the 'HaTzofeh' newspaper was founded and Cohen began working as a journalist. During the War of Independence, he served as the newspaper reporter in besieged Jerusalem. After the war and until the end of his life, he served as a newspaper reporter in the Knesset. In his work, he accompanied official delegations of the Knesset, to various countries around the world, and in one of the aforementioned journeys gave King Hussein of jordan, the English translation of his book "Jerusalem under siege" - The journal pages before us that as a journalist whose role accompanied the events of Jerusalem. At the same time, also he served as an immigrant envoy in Syria where he established youth movements.
