Sefer Shevet Yehudah, Amsterdam 1709. The R. Moshe Chalfin Copy.

A complete copy of Sefer Shevet Yehudah, printed at Amsterdam in 1709. Shevet Yehuda was written by 15th century Historian Shlomo ibn Virga of Spain and first published at Constantinople (Edirne) in 1554. As one who was expelled from Spain during the first inquisition of the late 15th century, this work places a special emphasis on the expulsion of Spanish Jewry, as well as the various other expulsions and terrible tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people throughout the ages.

A very interesting and comprehensive history of the tragedies of the Jewish people. This edition, following the Amsterdam edition of 1655, includes an additional historical account of the terrible tragedies of 1648-1649.

Seen on title page and on various leaves is the stamp of R. Moshe Chalfin. He was a disciple of the Chozeh of Lublin and Maggid of Kozhnitz. He subsequently became the father-in-law of R. Yitzchak Meir Alter of Gur (Chidushei HaRim), and R. Menachem Mendel of Kotsk.

In very good-excellent condition. Paper slightly browned as typical of Amsterdam imprints of this era.

64 pp.

Vinograd, Amsterdam 897.
