The Slavuta press was established by the city's rabbi, the Admo"r Rabbi Moshe Shapira [1762-1840], son of the famous tzaddik Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz, to earn a livelihood, because he did not want to profit from his Torah position. Slavuta books became famous in the Jewish world for their beauty and care, yet primarily because of the owner of the press - Rabbi Moshe of Slavuta, who was admired by Chassidic leaders, and who personally cast the lead letters, in sanctity and purity with lofty intentions; he would even immerse them in a mikveh before starting to work with them.

The Slavuta Gemaras are considered segulah books, and their possession is considered a segulah for wealth, spiritual satisfaction and success. This is in light of the approbations by Chassidic leaders for the Slavuta edition, in which they wrote extreme blessings for wealth and spiritual satisfaction from children: The Saraf of of Mogelnitza wrote: "You shall be blessed with all goodness, and merit viable children and grandchildren, occupied with our sacred Torah." The author of Aryeh D'Bei Ila'i wrote: "You shall be blessed with ... viable children, sustenance, and all goodness." The Admo"r Rabbi Shraga Feivel of Gritza wrote: "You shall be blessed with goodness, to receive blessing from Heaven ... to become wealthy with Hashem's blessing, and merit studying and to see your children and grandchildren studying Torah in tranquility" and more.
