FRENCH INVASION CURRENCY CALLED A "JEWISH FRAUD"
Rare propaganda handbill, 2pp. 4to., ca. June, 1944, issued to the French public shortly after D-Day. It warns of the issue of "monkey money", further adding: "It's a piece of paper...ANYONE CAN DO THE SAME...It's with this that the English-Americans pretend to pay the French while they take what belongs to them...It's a fraud, PURE AND SIMPLE. A JEWISH FRAUD because they want to RUIN FRANCE for all of the common people". Prior to the D-day invasion, American soldiers were issued "invasion" or "military currency" which had been issued to change the British money held by American servicemen. With the swift take-over of sovereignty by de Gaulle, who considered the US occupation franc as "counterfeit money", the currency rapidly faded out of use in favor of the pre-war French franc. A 2" tear at bottom and two short clean splits at fold.
