SALOMON HEINE COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL, 1841
SALOMON HEINE (1767-1844) German merchant and banker in Hamburg. Penniless, he came to Hamburg in 1784 and in the following years acquired one of the greatest fortunes in the country. In 1837, Heine's wife Betty died, and in her memory he donated 80,000 marks to fund the building of the "Israel Hospital" in Hamburg. Offered here is a contemporary German bronze non-portable commemorative medal, 1.75 in. diameter, the obverse bearing Heine's name above his profile and the motto: "CHARITY IS THE CROWN OF ALL VIRTUES". The reverse depicts a front view of the hospital with its name "ISRAEL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL" and at bottom mentions the donation in Betty Heine's name, dated "HAMB[URG]. 1841" Very good. The hospital remains in operation to this day.
