In the aftermath of the French Revolution of 1789 and the subsequent emancipation of the Spanish-Portuguese Jews of Bordeaux, Bayonne, Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin - the German Jews of the Alsace petitioned the French National Assembly for the rights of citizenship. With anti-Semitic overtones, the present tract repudiates these efforts. See Szajkowski, Jews and the French Revolutions (1970) p. 868, no. 112.
