Classic Sha'agas Arye, Frankfurt 1756, First Edition, With The 4 Rare Pages!
Sha'agas Aryeh - questions and answers, mainly on Orach Chaim, by Rabbi Aryeh Leib bar Asher Ginzburg of Metz. With the rare four leaves at the end of the book (after the list of errata), which were added after the printing. These leaves do not appear in most copies.
This is the first edition of the author's monumental work, published in his lifetime. He is known by its name, as the "Sha'agat Aryeh." The book was printed in a question-and-answer format, although the deliberated questions were not actually asked, but halachic issues he researched and arranged in question-and-answer format. The first edition before us was printed using many abbreviations, which made studying the book more difficult. There are those who theorize that the author used so many abbreviations due to lack of resources, in order to save paper. This book is considered the epitome of genius and logic, and until the most recent generation it was accepted that almost every Bar-mitzvah boy's sermon would be an in-depth discussion from the words of Sha'agas Aryeh.
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Ginzburg of Metz [1695-1785] was born to Rabbi Asher, rabbi of Pinsk. His grandfather was Rabbi Leib "Ba'al HaTosafot." He was recognized as a prodigy from his youth. He established a yeshivah for select students in Volozhin. After that, and until the end of his life, he served as rabbi, Av Beit Din and Rosh Yeshivah in Metz (northern France). Rabbi Aryeh Leib was stringent with himself regarding the prohibition of using new grain ("Chadash") outside of the Land of Israel, which he clarifies at length in a special compilation printed at the end of Sha'agas Aryeh. As he wandered from city to city (to experience "exile"), he had a sack with him in which he carried his own pot and grain. He would ask that his grain be cooked for him in his pot wherever he stayed, since he could not eat anything else because of issues with "Chadash." Rabbi Aryeh Leib was known for his tremendous sharpness, the might of his logic and his genius. He was especially famous for this book, Sha'agas Aryeh. Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, primary disciple of the Vilna Gaon, was among his students.
