Zichron Yerushalayim, by the First "Chacham Bashi." Livorno, 1784. Only Edition, Interesting and Rare.
Zichron Yerushalayim - unique composition about love of the Land of Israel and condemnation of assimilation by Rabbi Eliyahu Chazan of Jerusalem.
The author writes in his introduction, "While wandering in free, enlightened countries ... my inner spirit urged me ... to arouse ... love of the Holy Land, to awaken the ears of our people ... to draw those who are distant close to Torah and mitzvahs."
The book was written as a drama in 16 acts, with especially rich language. It includes a dispute between a "citizen" and a "stranger," in which the citizen is a patron in Tunisia and the stranger is the author, who came there as an emissary of Jerusalem. The play examines the Jewish people's coping with problems of the modern era: civil marriages, gentile wine and bread , the relationship between Diaspora Jews and those in the Land of Israel, Leverite marriages and extractions, the status of women in society, study of foreign languages, general and Torah curricula, women's study, philosophical questions - reward and punishment, religion and science, and more. Thanks to this book, many rabbis became aware of problems in the Jewish world, and of their severity. Lengthy foreword in French by the printer. Chazan family tree on the last leaf.
Rabbi Eliyahu Bechor Chazanֲ [1845?-1888] ascended to Jerusalem with his grandfather, Rabbi Chaim David Chazzan, in 1855, and was rabbinically ordained by him. He was Rabbi Yeshayah Bardaki's son-in-law, who was one of the leaders of the community of Perushim in Jerusalem. He was appointed as an Av Beit Din in Jerusalem already at the age of 21, and later, from 1874 to 1888, Rabbi Eliyahu served as chief rabbi of the Jews of Tripoli, and was the first rabbi of Libya to hold the title "Chacham Bashi." After that, he was chief rabbi of Alexandria.
