RABBI YOSEF HACOHEN SCHWARTZ (1875-1944) – NOTED PRE-WWII HUNGARIAN RABBI AND AUTHOR, INTERESTING POSTCARD.


Postcard written by Rabbi Yosef Hacohen Schwartz, Rabbi of Machzikei Torah in Grosswardein and author of many rabbinical works, to R. Yaakov Gordon in England. Dated Tuesday Mishpatim 5662 (1902) and written on the official stationery of his father-in-law Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch, Rabbi of Bonyhad, Hungary. The letter is in reply to an enquiry about the published works of his father-in-law Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch, listing those available and their prices.

Rabbi Yosef haCohen Schwartz was a son of Rabbi Naftali Schwartz, author of Beis Naftali and Rabbi of Mad. Rabbi Yosef was a disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Tenenbaum, author of Naharei Afarsemon, and son-in-law of Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch, Rabbi of Bonyhad and author of Pri Hasadeh and Tevuas Hasadeh. Served as Dayan in Bonyhad and Rabbi of the Machzikei Torah community in Groswardein. Authored a large number of halachic works and edited his father-in-law’s writings for publication. For 20 years he served as editor of the respected rabbinical journal ‘Vayelaket Yosef’ including many of his own contributions.
