Glass plate - Moses Montefiore [England, 1880s]. Glass plate with portrait of Moses Montefiore and the caption: "Sir Moses Montefiore", commemorating his 100th birthday. Under the portrait are the Hebrew letters M.T. (Mazal tov).
This plate is connected to the miracle which happened to a Jew who was saved from the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York.
A Jew named Joe Tovey was supposed to attend a professional seminar at the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. He rushed to leave his synagogue to reach the seminar at 8:30 am, however, the rabbi of the synagogue detained him upon his exit, requesting him to bring this plate from a certain address in Manhattan on his return from the seminar. This conversation with the rabbi delayed him and he missed his train and boarded the next one. Before he reached his destination, the North Tower had already been hit. This story is documented in the book Even in the Darkest Moments, by Zeev Breier, pp. 176-178 [see enclosed copy].
* Enclosed is the invitation to the seminar which was scheduled for that day at the World Trade Center to which Joe Tovey was invited.
Plate, diameter: 26.5 cm. Good condition. Scratches.
