Joseph and His Brothers - Two Anti-Semitic Medals - Germany, 18th Century
Joseph and his brothers, two anti-Semitic medals designed by Johann Christian Reich. [Germany, ca. 1772]. German.
1. Obverse: Joseph's brothers kneeling before him. Surrounding them is the legend "Die Theurung Im Land Macht Joseph Bekant". Reverse: a long legend - a list of food items and their prices. Diameter: 29 mm. Amateur engraving of a serial number.
2. Obverse: Joseph's brothers kneeling before him (Joseph's right hand rests on a sack of corn). Above them is the legend "Lieb Die Brüder Gott Gibts Wieder" and in the center is the legend "Gott Segne Euch". At the bottom is the legend "Dantes 1772". Reverse: long legend - list of food items and their prices. Diameter: 29 mm.
The medals were issued at a time of high inflation. The legends apparently blame the Jew (Joseph) for the difficult economic situation in Germany.
Provenance: collection of Bruno Kirschner.
