"The Flag of Zion" – Hebrew Zionist Poems by Joseph Massel, including Poems in Honor of the Zionist Congresses – Manchester, Early 20th Century – Handwritten Dedication by the Author
"Degel Zion" [The Flag of Zion], "17 Zionist poems, by one of the lovers of Zion" [Joseph Massel]. Manchester: J. Massel & son. The Cheetham Press, [early 20th century].
A booklet with 17 Zionist poems, some of them translated, by the poet and translator Joseph Massel. Some of the poems were written or translated in honor of the first Zionist congresses – the second to the fifth congresses. The decoration on the title page (which was also printed on the front binding) is signed in print "J.M." (Joseph Massel).
On the fifth page, there is a Hebrew dedication handwritten by Joseph Massel: "To the rabbi the scholar Dr. Zalkind a remembrance offering by the author who loves him". Presumably, the dedication is to his friend Ya'akov Meyer Zalkind (rabbi and author, born in Kobryn).
Joseph Massel (1850-1912), a poet and Hebrew translator, born in Russia. He immigrated to Manchester (England) during the 1880s or 1890s and there established and managed a Hebrew printing house. Massel was one of the first supporters of political Zionism in England, took part in the activities of Zionist associations, was vice president of the Zionist association of Manchester and participated in several Zionist Congresses. In ca. 1883 he was among the Jewish settlers who made an attempt to establish a settlement in Latakia, Syria with the assistance of The Syrian Colonization Fund.
