Footnotes
The Holborn Restaurant was sited on the corner of Kingsway and High Holborn and, as one of the largest public establishments in London, was popular with clubs and societies (including as a place for Masonic meetings); the British Chess Federation was founded here in 1904 and many athletes attending the 1908 London Olympic Games attended banquets here. The restaurant was opened by Frederick Gordon (later to establish the Gordon Hotel Group) in 1874 and eventually closed down in 1954 with the building since then demolished.
