Early 1st millennium AD
A horn-hilted forged-iron knife with silver-gilt crossguard, gold leaf panel to the grip and silver-gilt cap; to the lower grip, four rectangular cloisons with garnets inset; to the upper grip a cap with conical garnets set around the rim and a larger conical garnet to the top. 175 grams, 33cm (13 1/4"). Very fine condition.
Provenance
Property of a UK gentleman; formerly in a Bavarian collection, formed in the 1980s.
