9th-11th century AD
A hollow ceramic vessel with conical body, intended to be filled with explosive liquid and a wick, and used as a hand grenade; a band of large chevrons with smaller in between to the shoulder, three long raised lugs to the body; short neck with domed top. 536 grams, 11.1cm (4 1/4"). Fine condition. A rare type.

From an important English collection; acquired in the 1990s.
