9th-11th century AD
A hollow ceramic piriform missile with conical top and thick rim enclosing the narrow mouth, lozengiform lugs extending from the neck to the base; intended to be filled with explosive liquid and a wick, and used as a hand grenade. 635 grams, 16.5cm (6 1/2"). Fair condition, chipped.

Property of a North London gentleman; acquired on the UK art market before 2000.
