Lexicographical dictionary of 339 plant names given in
Syriac, Hebrew, Latin and German. The volume is the first work of one of the
most important Hungarian Jewish scholars of the period. An appendix adds Punic
names written in Greek from sources such as Dioscorides, Apuleius and Pliny,
and commentators’ notes (those of Gesenius, Schräder, Sprengel); there are
indexes for cross-reference in Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Arabic. Particularly
evident in the present work is the author’s interest in ‘realia’ (artefacts of
the period). The method of research later led to his important Flora der Juden,
1924-34.
