Four early Henrew translations of English and French books and plays. Vienna, Vilnius, Zolochiv and Manchester, 1871-1908.
1. Shir yesodato be-katuv ṿa-yegaresh et ha-adam / Milton's "Paradise Lost" in Hebrew Blank Verse…a fter John Milton, [Vienna, 1871]. First Hebrew translation of John Milton's book "Paradise Lost" by Yitzhak Salkinsohn.
[8], 351 pp, 19 cm. Fair-good condition. Second title page is detached, stained and torn (with open tears, with text omission. Restored with adhesive tape). Numerous tears to first and last pages (some restored with adhesive tape and pasted paper). Significant staining. Some pencil and pen inscriptions on endpapers. Cardboard binding with strips of cloth to spine and corner, slightly worn.
2. Ish Yehudi, entertaining play in five acts by Richard Cumberland, Hebrew by Yosef Brill. Printed by Yehudah Leib ben Elizer Lipman, Vilnius, 1878. A comic play from the 18th century in the spirit of the play "Merchant from Venice" by Shakespeare. Translated by Yosef Brill (1839-1919).
[4], 84 pp, 17 cm. New binding. Good condition. Stains. Open tear to title page, with text omission (restored with pasted paper. Some pencil inscription. Some creases and damages.
3 Tartuffe or the impostor, play in five acts by Molière. Translated by Nachman Rosenkrantz. Printed by Wilhelm Tsuḳerḳandel, Zloṭshov, [1901].
First Hebrew translation of the play "Tartuffe " by Molière.
86 pp, 16.5 cm. Good condition. Hard cover (lacking original wrappers). A piece is cut off the title page. Ink-stamp on title page. Pen and pencil inscriptions on inner side of front binding. Some stains. Cardboard binding with cloth strip on the spine. Slight damages along the spine.
4. The Vale of Siddim, a Mystery. Composed by J. W. Thomas. Translated by J. Massel. Unknown publisher, Manchester, 1908.
At the opening of the book appears a handwriiten dedication by the translator, Joseph Massel, to Yehudah Eisenstein ("Ba'al HaOtzarot"): "to my friend the clever rabbi Mr. Y.D. Eisenstein with gratitude from the author" (Hebrew).
55 pp, 12.5 cm. Good condition. Hard cover, with original wrappers. Front cover is detached, with tears to margins. Some stains and creases. Half-cloth cardboard binding, slightly worn.
