Zeh sefer Shevach V’Zimrah. Only edition Fossano 1796.
Order of service to be recited annually by the Jewish community of Fossano.
Whilst the Napoleonic Wars thrust the European continent into a state of war and turmoil affecting the general populace, the Jews were particularly affected. Jewish communities were frequent scapegoats, accused of siding with the enemy, spying and general treason.
In the spring of 1796 Napoleon’s armies besieged the city of Fossano in North West Italy. The local populace claimed that the Jews were assisting the French by spying and were conspiring to achieve a French victory. On the fourth night of Pesach, fearing a pogrom, the Jews fortified themselves in the Synagogue whilst the Gentile mob surrounded the building planning to massacre them. By Divine providence the French fired a cannon at just that moment causing the mob to flee in panic. Shortly thereafter, Napoleon’s armies entered the city and the Jews were miraculously saved. In commemoration, this text consisting of 36 stanzas was composed to be sung yearly on the anniversary of this miracle.
With an introduction recounting the miraculous events in detail.
