GUSTAV LOMBARD
(1895-1992) High-ranking member in the SS during World War II. Lombard's 1st SS Cavalry Regiment was key in the Pripyat Swamps operation to systematically remove the Jews from Ukrainian villages. Himmler's order was to drive the Jewish women and children away and then shoot the Jewish men. Lombard reinterpreted this message and ordered his troops to kill any Jew they came across. By August 11, Lombard reported 11,000 men, women, and children had been killed. Lombard's zeal and initiative in this operation were noted and he was awarded an Iron Cross for 'Bravery in Battle' in September 1941. After the war, he was arrested and charged as a war criminal. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 1947. Signed and inscribed in black ink on the verso 'With best greetings and continued success with the collection wishing Lombard Munich 7.11.1980', 3.5 x 5 inches.
