ERNST VON LEYSER
(1889-1962) General in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II who commanded several army corps. He commanded the 269th Infantry Division which fought in the Northern Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. In 1947, he and other high-ranking German officials were tried for war crimes. These charges included the mass murder of hundreds of thousands, having ordered hostage-taking and reprisal killings, plundering and wanton destruction of villages, murder and ill-treatment and killing of prisoners of war, and murder, torture, deportation, and sending to concentration camps of Greek, Albanian, and Yugoslav civilians. He was sentenced to ten years imprisonment but was released after three years. Signed on the verso in blue ink 'v. Leyser General der Infanterie und kommandierender General a. D.', 3.5 x 5 inches.
