An early 19th Century Shoemaker’s Leather Apron
The leather apron of an unidentified “cordwainer” or shoemaker of the 1820-1840s period, probably a member of the Plumer-Humphreys-Barton family of Newbury, Massachusetts. Acquired in 2018 from the estate sale at the c. 1700 Plumer House on the Lower Green along with the cordwainer’s bench, original shoes, shoe and boots lasts, and paper patterns (now in the study collection of present-day cordwainer). The apron is complete with leather neck strap and side ties of leather, with the wear and dye staining expected on the apron of a practitioner of this craft.
