Written as an open letter to an unborn grandson, French-Jewish writer and philosopher Edmond Flegenheimer, better known as Edmond Fleg (1874-1963),was bothered by the extreme anti-Semitism revealed by the Dreyfus Affair - a scandal he watched unfold, and later prompted him to write this work. The conclusion of the present text includes prose that has now become incorporated into the Reform liturgy: A list of twelve proclamations each beginning: ”I am a Jew because…” (e.g.: ”I am a Jew because in all places where there are tears and suffering the Jew weeps.”)
