GANZFRIED, SHLOMO
(Author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, 1804-86). Autograph Manuscript Signed, written in Hebrew.

Draft of a Halachic responsum concerning the status of milk that stemmed from cows who had been fed Chometz by their Gentile owners during Pesach. Contains edits such as lines crossed out as well as entire paragraphs added, with notations marking where within the text they were to appear within the final draft.

With: Draft of the original correspondence from R. Ganzfried to R. Chaim Sofer of Munkatch (the Machaneh Chaim) summarized within the responsum itself. And: First page of another letter by R. Ganzfried, regarding the topic of Rotzeh BeKiyumo, Chametz, and borrowing items from non-Jews on Pesach.

4.5 page responsum. 2.5 page response to R. Sofer of Munkatch. 1 page of Hosafoth (additions) to be added to the original responsum following the exchange with R. Sofer. 1 page from a letter regarding Rotzeh BeKiyumo.
Ungvar (Uzhorod), Austro-Hungary: circa 1870

A FASCINATING INSIGHT AS TO HOW RABBIS PREPARED AND EDITED THEIR RESPONSA BEFORE DISSEMINATION.

Parts of the present responsum were printed in abridged form; see Ganzfried’s Lechem Hapanim (within his Kitzur) nos. 114 and 117. The final version of the responsum has been published in Otzroth Hasofer 19, 2008, pp. 29-34.

See www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx? req=58497&st=&pgnum=35&hilite=).

THUS THIS MANUSCRIPT ENABLES THE SCHOLAR TO COMPARE THE FINISHED PSAK WITH THIS DRAFT, AND HENCE DIRECTLY ENTER THE THOUGHT PROCESS OF R. GANZFRIED.

Noteworthy variances present only in the draft copy include:

- A lengthier introduction to the question at hand.

- The presence of a footnoted source omitted from the final copy (possibly due to a scribal error).

- Notations (Lekan Hosafah) marking the points at which content from R. Ganzfried’s correspondence with R. Sofer was to enter the draft. These additions themselves are written on a separate page.

- Footnotes containing additional material to be added to the text.

- Numerous phrases or words crossed out, in favor of different expressions.

- A ‘guiding paragraph, ’ summarizing what had been spoken about until this point in the responsum.

R. Shlomo Ganzfried was an outspoken defender of Orthodoxy against the inroads of Hungarian Reform. He was a prolific author, best known for his “Kitzur” a summary guide to the Shulchan Aruch which offers concise instruction in all matters of daily ritual law.
