London: Thursday, Parshath Vayechi 1933

The great Ba’al Mussar R. Eliyohu Eliezer Dessler (1892–1953) immigrated to London in 1927 where he served as Rav in Dalston and taught small groups of eager students. One of the founders of the famed Gateshead Kollel, towards the end of his life he moved to Eretz Israel where he served as Mashgiach in the Ponevitch Yeshiva. His works, especially in the area of mussar (moral and character development) were published as Michtav Me’Eliyahu and are considered major texts in this field.

Vilna born Eliyahu Eliezer Skolsky (1887-1971) was one of the leaders of the Adath Israel community of London. He was a descendent of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodnensky (1831-1887) a prominent Vilna rabbi, son-in-law of R. Yisrael of Salant, founder of the mussar movement and father-in-law of R. Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky and of R. Reuven Dov Dessler (who named his son R. Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, after his eminent grandfather).

The two Eliyahu Eliezer cousins (Dessler and Skolsky) were close friends and it was indeed Skolsky who made arrangements for R. Dessler to reach London and attain a position in the Dalston rabbinate.
