GEORGE S. PATTON
(1885-1945) American General in WWII who commanded the Seventh United States Army in the Mediterranean and the Third United States Army in France and Germany after the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. General Patton signed war-date War Department envelope, examined and labeled 'Opened by Army U.S. Examiner sent from North Africa. Patton signed the envelope in the lower left corner 'Censored G S Patton Jr Maj Gen.' The envelope is addressed to Patton's nephew FREDERICK AYER (1915-1974) in So. Hamilton, Massachusetts. Ayer was chief of the FBI Liaison Units in the ETO during the war. The sender was Capt. R. Jensen APO 758 c/o PM NYC (7th US Army SUSA at the time in North Africa). The envelope is postmarked 'U.S. Army Postal Service A.P.O. Jan 28 1943 P.M.' 9.5 x 4 inches. WITH: Two original US Signal Corps photographs, the first photograph shows General Patton with Soviet General Ivan Konev at Linz, Austria. The second photograph is of the American flag flying at half-mast in the American military cemetery, Casablanca, Morocco. Pencil notes on back, 4 x 5 inches.
