Shank notes that these notes were originally to be used to pay contractors and others who supplied the B&O Railroad. Because of the railroad's strength, however, they were accepted by other businesses and became a medium of exchange in the community at large during the small change shortage of the period. Graded vf20 by PMG - a damaged one sold for $170 at heritage in 2009 for $150
