Autographed Halachic Ruling by Rabbi Yehuda Assad and Rabbis of Serdheil. 1829

Halachic ruling regarding financial dispute written in Serdheil, 1829, and autographed by the genius Harav Yehuda Assad and dayanim of the Beis Din of Serdheil.

At this point in time, Harav Yehuda Assad was still a junior dayan on the Beis Din in Serdheil, which is why his name appears second on the list of signatures. Following the recommendation of the Chasam Sofer, he was appointed to the Beis Din in 1826, and only later, in 1853, was he promoted to Av Beis Din.

Hagaon Harav Yehuda Assad (1794-1866), Av Beis Din of Serdheil, was exceedingly pious and one of the greatest Tzadikim and spiritual leaders of Hungarian Jewry in his era. He authored thousands of responsa and battled valiantly against Reform Jewry to preserve tradition.

The signature of Harav Shlomo Eibenschutz appears at the top of the list. He is the “Dayan Rabbi Shlomo” mentioned in the Chasam Sofer’s responsum in Even Haezer Vol. 1 Ch. 18. In many sources, among them Shem Hagedolim Me’eretz Hager and Ishim B’Teshuvos Chasam Sofer, he is referred to only by his first name, along with the annotation: “I did not find him mentioned elsewhere”

Through the manuscript presented here, it may be concluded that his last name was Eibenschutz. An important revelation for the history of the Rabbanim of Serdheil.

The signature of Harav Wolf Bonda (circa 1800-1864), dayan and Raavad of Serhdeil, appears third on the list. Harav Wolf was the nephew of the Machatzis Hashekel and a disciple of the Chasam Sofer and Maharam Banet. He also served as Av Beis Din of the adjacent town Helitschaba. In one of his letters, he relates, “The Rav of Pressburg [Chasam Sofer] ordained me when I was twenty-five years old on all of Shas and Poskim.”

Includes complete wax seal of the Beis Din. The center of the seal features a Star of David.

Serdheil, 1829. Page size: 36x21. Good condition.
