Complete Kuntress of Original Torah Novellae –  by the Ksav Sofer 1860

An entire kuntress by Harav Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshivah in Pressburg, author of Ksav Sofer.

The Ksav Sofer inscribed these novellae while staying at the resort town of Salish, where he would journey periodically for strengthening his health .

At the opening of the kuntress, the Ksav Sofer writes: “ (sugya of) Davar sheyesh lo mateirin, which we learned in the summer shiurim of 1860…and I wrote it here in the Salish resort.”

The kuntress has two title pages.

The first reads: [קונטרס] י"ד סוגיא דדבר שישל"מ, the second is as stated above.

At the opening of the first page is written: “B’ezras Hashem Yisborach, that which Hashem Yisborach has granted me…that we learned in the Torah classes in the summer of 1860…”

On page 4a, Ch. 12, the Ksav Sofer mentions his father the Chasam Sofer and his grandfather Rabbi Akiva Eiger.

The novellae in this kuntress is on the topic of “davar sheyesh lo mateirin, ” discussed at the start of maseches Beitzah.

The Ksav Sofer Harav Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer (1815-1873) succeeded his father the Chasam Sofer as Av Beis Din of Pressburg. He “... stepped into our father’s shoes completely, and did not deviate one iota from his ways… His glow enveloped him the whole day, and his ruach hakodesh lived on within him. The Hand of Hashem was known in all his deeds, for Moshe placed his hand upon him, and all his character traits were our father’s elevated character traits—his Torah, his righteousness, his modesty and his leadership.” (Harav Shimon Sofer, Av Beis Din of Cracow, in his introduction to Shu”t Ksav Sofer).

At the end of his life, as his final illness overcame him, the Chasam Sofer placed his hands upon the head of his son the Ksav Sofer and blessed him upon his appointment to the rabbinate of Pressburg. He said: “Your grandfather Rabbi Akiva on your right, your grandfather Rabbi Shmuel Schotten Katz on your left; an anonymous angel is on your head; and also I shall follow you and fulfill your words.” The Ksav Sofer later expressed that the Chasam Sofer’s hands upon his head felt like a blazing fire.

At just 24 years of age, the Ksav Sofer succeeded his father, the venerable Chasam Sofer, as Rav, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshivah of Pressburg. For the next 33 years, the Pressburg Yeshivah thrived, expanded and flourished under his talented leadership, cultivating generations of Rabbanim who disseminated Torah wisdom and fear of heaven throughout Hungary. It is no exaggeration to say that the vast majority of Hungarian Rabbanim were students of the Ksav Sofer’s Beis Midrash.

Salish, 1860. [6] leaves (12) written sides + [2] title pages. Page size: 26 cm. Entirely handwritten by the author. Good condition. Beautiful new leather binding.
