Rambam - Sefer Hamitzvos. First Edition. Constantinople, 1510
Rare first edition of the Rambam’s Sefer Hamitzvos, listing the 613 commandments and prohibitions.
Based on the Talmud statement that there are 613 mitzvot. The Rambam puts forth 14 principles and criteria to define which mitzvos are eligible for inclusion in the count of the 613.
This work was written as an introduction to his magnum opus, Mishnah Torah. It was originally authored in Arabic, yet even during his lifetime the Rambam made it known that he wished to translate his sefer into Hebrew (Teshuvos HaRambam Ch. 368). Sefer Hamitzvos was subsequently translated by the famed interpreter Rabbi Moshe Ben Rabbi Shmuel Ibn Tabon whose introduction is printed at the beginning of the sefer.
Sefer Hamitzvos of the Rambam is one of the fundamental works on the 613 mitzvos, with extensive Torah literature written both in defense and opposition of his count.
