Letter of Torah Novellae by Rabbi Yaakov Leib Katz-Strasser, Son-in-Law of the Ksav Sofer. Pressburg, 1880

Personal letter contains chiddushei Torah regarding the mitzvah of tithing one’s earnings. The letter is handwritten by Rabbi Yaakov Leib Katz Strasser of Pressburg, son-in-law of the revered Ksav Sofer and progenitor of the extended Strasser family.

Harav Yaakov Yehuda Leib Hakohen Strasser (1832-1912) was the son-in-law of the Ksav Sofer with whom he shared a close relationship. The Ksav Sofer once commented, “A day Rabbi Yakov Yehuda comes to visit is a Yom Tov for me.”

The Ksav Sofer describes him: “A kohein whose knowledge is good…Stringent in all aspects pertaining to yiras Shamayim…behold he is my son-in-law [whom I love] as a son, my beloved pupil, the righteous rabbi who is great in Torah and has pure fear of heaven, replete with the blessing of Hashem…Moreinu Yaakov Leib Katz Strasser.”

He spent the majority of his days in Tab where he lived an ascetic lifestyle, although in his final years, he took up residence in Pressburg. Remnants of his chiddushei Torah were printed in Kutnress Toras Avos (Brooklyn, 1990). His famous descendants include Rabbi Akiva Hakohen Strasser, Av Beis of Tokaj, and Rabbi Shomo Tzvi Hakohen Strasser, Av Beis Din of Debrecen.

Pressburg, 1880. 2 sides. Page size: 23x14; unpublished.
