Holy Handwritten Leaf from Shu"t Chasam Sofer

Halachic Ruling written by the Holy Chasam Sofer. Pressburg, 1819

The present full double-sided handwritten leaf is part of a responsum written by Rabbeinu Moshe Sofer, Av Beis Din of Pressburg and author of the Chasam Sofer.

On this page, the Chasam Sofer mentions concepts he presented in his youth to his mentor Harav Nosson Adler. He writes: “ I remember that when I was a youngster I presented this before mori v’rabi the genius of Yisrael, Nosson Adler Katz zt”l, and these words found favor in his eyes.”

The Chasam Sofer and Rabbi Nosson Adler
From his early youth, the Chasam Sofer was very close to his master Rabbi Nosson Adler. Harav Moshe Sofer grew up in the home of his Rebbe where he absorbed his Torah and sacred conduct. Throughout his life, he would mention his rebbi’s name with awe, perceiving him as a holy man of G-d. He even expressed the thought that his Rebbe was loftier than an angel (Safra D’Malka p. 12).

Responsum of the Chasam Sofer
The Chasam Sofer’s halachic rulings were accepted universally by all gedolim of Hungary, and questions were sent to him from around the whole world. Maharam Banet attested that Hashem’s Divine Presence accompanied him and that the halachah inevitably adhered to his rulings.

The Maharash Engel revealed, “I learned from my Rabbis that the Noda B’Yehuda and Chasam Sofer were sent from heaven to establish halachos in Yisrael.”

This teshuvah is part of his response to his student Harav Aharon Kutna regarding the question of a sick patient drinking milk within 6 hours of eating meat. It was published in Shu”t Chasam Sofer Yoreh De’ah (Pressburg, 1819). Date based on Shu”t Chasam Sofer.

Pressburg, 1819. [1] One large leaf. Page size: 23.5x19 cm. Double-sided. Many minor holes were professionally restored.

The Segulah of the Chasam Sofer’s Handwriting

The Chasam Sofer’s descendants affirm the legacy that the handwriting of their revered ancestor is a segulah for protection from any trial or tribulation. When his son Harav Shimon Sofer, Av Beis Din of Cracow, would face the Austrian Parliament, he would take his father's writings with him.

Maharam Banet stated that a mere glance at the sacred writing of the Chasam Sofer is a segulah for fear of heaven. It is told that Maharam Banet once received a written responsum from the Chasam Sofer and devoted extra time to reading and analyzing it. When his students asked if the letter perplexed him, he replied, “No, but I am delving into this responsum since the mere sight of his sacred handwriting increases fear of heaven.”

The Chasam Sofer's manuscripts are a segulah for protection!

It is known that the Admor, Harav Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar also asserted that looking at the Chasam Sofer's handwriting is a segulah for yiras Shamayim.
Regarding the writing of his holy treatises, the Chasam Sofer wrote: "As long as Hashem will grant me life and strength, I am ready to learn with whoever comes to listen… Behold I am writing in ink everything that G-d has bestowed upon me in both halachah and aggadah."

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, Av Beis Din of Shamloy, wrote in Zichron L'Moshe: "All of his words and chiddushim in halachah and aggadah are replete with holiness and fear of heaven and chassidus…
