AN ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON, ST. PANTELEIMON, 19TH C
A 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Martyr Healer Panteleimon, the patron saint of physicians. Born in the Roman province of Bithynia, in what is modern Turkey, St Pantaleon (c275-303) was martyred during the persecution of Christians ordered by Emperor Diocletian. Wood, egg tempera on gesso.
