Rare: Sefer Mitpachas Seforim - R. Yaakov Emden, Altona 1768. First Edition.

A complete copy of Sefer Mitpachas Seforim written by R. Yaakov Emden. Although written in 1728, it wasn’t until 1768 until it was actually printed. This first edition was printed at the personal printing press of the Yaavetz in Altona.

R. Emden authored this work to challenge the authenticity of the Sefer HaZohar. It is made up of two parts; the first disproving parts of the Zohar, and the second describes his overall approach to Kabbalah as well a critical analysis on various Kabbalists and their works.

Sefer HaZohar was virtually unknown until the late 13th century, upon being discovered by the prominent Jewish philosopher R. Moshe De Leon. De Leon attributed the Zohar to R. Shimon Bar Yochai, and in this work Yaavetz vehemently opposes this. He goes on to prove with examples that many passages of the Zohar are of the imagination of De Leon and were inserted by him. For example, the Zohar states the word Sinagoga, which has no meaning in the words of Chazal. Yaavetz therefore maintains that it must be De Leon’s addition, as Sinagoga translates to Beis Midrash in Spanish, De Leon’s native tongue.

An exceedingly rare and important work.

In excellent condition. Paper slightly brown, as in all Altona editions.
