F. C. Yohn (American, 1875-1933). Vaqueros Resting in Camp.Graphite on paper, 15 ½ x 20 ½ inches (view). Attractively matted and framed. Commonly known by his initials "F. C.", Yohn was recognized by age twenty-five as one of the nation's top historical illustrators, "second only to Howard Pyle, " according to one publication. He specialized in historical military themes the frontier West, his work appearing in periodicals including Scribner's Magazine, Harper's Magazine, and Collier's Weekly. Books he illustrated include Jack London's A Daughter of the Snows, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Dawn of a To-morrow, and Henry Cabot Lodge's Story of the American Revolution. He designed the 2-cent U.S. Postal Service stamp in 1929 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of George Rogers Clark's capture of Vincennes, and he is best known for his painting of George Washington at Valley Forge. This handsome work was probably executed as a commission piece for a novella or short story, currently unidentified, and probably published in Scribner's or Harper's.
