Letter Handwritten and Signed by Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah Schneersohn (Wife of Rebbe Rashab) of Lubavitch – Efforts to Rescue Rabbi Dov Nissan Bespalov During the Holocaust
Letter (approx. 9 lines) handwritten and signed by Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah Schneersohn, wife of Rebbe Rashab of Lubavitch. [Before 1942]. Yiddish.
Presumably sent to R. Chanoch Hendel Havlin, a Chabad activist in Eretz Israel who lobbied extensively to obtain immigration certificates for Chabad Chassidim from Europe. In her letter, Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah asks him to obtain a visa for R. Dov Nissan Bespalov, son of R. Yaakov Mordechai of Poltava.
The present letter was presumably never printed.
In 1939, with the outbreak of WWII, Rebbe Rayatz was residing in Warsaw under German bombardment. His mother, Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah was living at the time in the home of R. Dov Nissan Bespalov. Reputedly, during one of the heavy air raids over Warsaw, everyone wanted to flee, but the Rebbetzin refused, since there was a Torah scroll there. Ultimately, whoever stayed with her was saved, while those who fled didn't return. The present letter on behalf of R. Dov Nissan Bespalov, was presumably written shortly after Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah and her son Rebbe Rayatz fled occupied Warsaw and reached the United States (her efforts did not bear fruit and R. Dov Nissan perished in the Holocaust ca. 1942).
