Afghanistan Iron Mechanical Bank
Made by Mechanical Novelty Works of New Britain, Ct. - Mid 1880's. Afghanistan has been an epicenter of geopolitical turbulence for centuries. This small toy bank identifies two of these opposing forces; Great Britain is represented by the Lion and Russia is symbolized by the Bear. They confront each other at the "Gate of Herat" in an effort to establish hegemony in the region.
