The Forty Niner Iron Bank
(Converted Cigar Cutter). Designed by Zimmerman & Reed Buffalo, NY - Pat.'d March 30, 1897. The term "49er" refers to participants in the California Gold Rush because 1849 was the peak year of migration to the streams and rivers of Northern California. There was a flaw in the design of this bank and it never went into production. Speculation suggests that early hobbyists created the bank from a cigar cutter. Coins deposited through the slot in the mule's saddle bag cause either his ears or his tail to wiggle.
