EARLY CHINESE PUNISHMENT PAINTING ON RICE PAPER
An Early Chinese painting on rice paper depicting a Punishment, Kanggu, that was used in China to punish petty crimes. It was also called tcha, kea, and qian hao. It was a large, thick board, 4 or 5 palms wide, with a hollowed out hole in the middle. It was put on a person's neck, and two sheets of paper were attached to it, on one of which his crimes are listed, on the other - the punishments that he must incur. Every morning he was taken out with a board around his neck to the most crowded places. Framed.
