Mix Media Abstract Painting In Manner Of Cy Twombly
Abstract Watercolor Mix Media Painting Signed UNKNOWN ARTIST, Could Be A Sleeper. Measure 29" x 40". From DR Jim Cobb's Estate Florida And Greely Colorado, Division Chairperson For Communications And Humanities At Kent Campus. MR. MARK WINTER GAVE US HIS OPINION AS FOLLOWS, READ BELOW. The subject work can be described as a mixed-media work on paper attributed to Cy Twombly(American, 1928-2011). The composition reveals an abstract image, dominated by scribbledtext and nonrepresentational markings. The materials used appear to be pastels along with awhite gouache or acrylic wash. Much of the sheet is left unpainted, revealing the off-whitecolor of the paper.Signature:The subject work appears to be signed “Twombly” along the right edge. The surname ispreceded by another word that does not include “Cy.”Condition:The subject work is in good condition. There is, what seems to be, a partial shoe print on theupper edge.Analysis:Twombly did create a number of works on paper using mixed-media scribbles. These markingscould resemble calligraphy or other imagery but were not as dense or consistent as his largepainting series.Twombly’s works on paper often resemble excerpts from a notebook or incidental markings ornotes. The drawings are not usually as dense or busy as the subject work, which includes layersof drawn scribbles and washes of color. We can also note that Twombly usually signed “Cy Twombly” and often included a date, ratherthan simply writing “Twombly.”Work on paper with signature and writingMixed-media work on paper with writingMixed-media work on paperA number of comparable works that include text, or text-like calligraphy along with scribbles, reveal more typical imagery by the artist. In comparison, the subject work imagery lacks aminimal quality and appears overly energetic. The layered use of color and wash also does nothave a clear orientation. The work is not like a notebook page but is overly worked. Conclusion:In our opinion, the subject work is not an authentic Twombly but was created “in the mannerof” Twombly.
