Secret Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Herzog. Dublin, 1932

Lengthy letter handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog, from the period he served in the Dublin rabbinate. Cheshvan, 1933.

Secret letter sent to an unknown Talmudic scholar about a specific shidduch that appeared to be suitable as the backgrounds apparently matched, "but I cannot hide the truth, to my sorrow, that he does not observe Shabbat..." and therefore Rabbi Herzog writes that he cannot express his opinion about such a weighty topic; the matter should be decided according to his honor's own opinion."

At the end of the letter, Rabbi Herzog repeats and emphasizes that he requests that the content of the letter be kept "a complete secret."

Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog [1889-1959] was the chief Ashkenazic rabbi of the Land of Israel from 1936, then chief rabbi of the State of Israel until his passing. He was previously chief rabbi of the Jews in Ireland. His son was President Chaim Herzog.
