Anthology of Sermons by the Author of Bikkurei Aga"n. Constantine, Algeria, 1839-1842

Large and important manuscript, apparently never printed. Content: Scholarly sermons on most of the weekly Torah portions, as delivered in the Etz Chaim yeshivah in Constantine, Algeria, 1839-1842. With neither signature nor colophon.

As stated, the author's name does not explicitly appear on the manuscript, but written on page [4] is: "Aga"n indices for the book Bikkurei Aga"n."This implies that the author of this manuscript is famous Kabbalistic gaon, Rabbi Eliyahu Gij, one of the rabbis of Constantine, known as Rabbi Aga"n. Likewise, the following sentence appears at the beginning of most of the sermons: "This is what I innovated when I delivered a sermon at the large synagogue for the members of the Etz Chaim yeshivah, parashat ... year ... in Constantine" (where Rabbi Aga"n served). Also, on page 27, the author mentions, with many honorifics, Rabbi Yedidyah Rephael Abulafiah, rabbi of Jerusalem, who was a contemporary of Rabbi Aga"n's.

The sermonizer writes on page 100: "This is what I innovated when I spoke at the end of the Shloshim for the sage R' Avraham Gozlan, the humble sage Rabbi Avraham Cohen Tanuni, and the sage Rabbi David Atlon, who all passed away in the middle of Shevat 1856 ..." There is a sermon written in Judeo-Arabic on page 25.

Kabbalist Rabbi Eliyahu Gij [1800-1882] was a pious Kabbalist from Constantine, Algeria. He authored the book Pri Aga"n [אג"ן is an abbreviation of Eliyahu Gij [ben] Nejima]. He was the father of the leading Kabbalist of Algeria, Rabbi Kalfah Gij - one of the leading rabbis of Algeria in the 19th century, author of the important commentary K'Gan HaYerek on Tikkunei HaZohar and K'Gan Ratuv on Etz Chaim by the Ariza"l.
