Rare Original Autographed Responsum by the Revered Tzaddik Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto (circa 1595)

 Harav Hamusmach —The Ordained Rabbi

In 1538, Rabbi Yaakov Beirav, one of the eminent spiritual leaders of his era, reinstituted the practice of semichah. He first received smicha himself  from 25 of his Rabbinical Talmidim, and then went on to ordain four world-acclaimed sages: Rabbi Yosef Karo, the Mabit, the Ramak, and Rabbi Yosef Sagis. Rabbi Yosef Karo perpetuated this practice by ordaining several of his own disciples and the latter continued this practice.

Throughout history, there were only a handful of Rabbis who were awarded the rare and coveted title ‘Harav Hamusmach.’ One of these righteous tzaddikim was Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto who was referred to as ‘Harav Hamusmach’ by Torah luminaries throughout the ages.

There are no known writings by this author in any private collections.

A Holy Dynasty

The roots of the glorious Pinto dynasty date back to the small town of Pinto near Madrid, Spain. During the era of the Spanish Expulsion, the Pinto family fled their native land to Morocco where they flourished. Since that day, Pinto remains one of the most influential Jewish families in the Jewish world.

The most famous among the Pinto dynasty and the progenitor of the dynasty was the saintly kabbalist Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto (circa 1565-1648) who numbered among the exalted sages in his generation. His written legacy, especially his Peirush Maharif on Ein Yaakov which expounds upon the Aggadah, was enthusiastically received in yeshivos and Jewish homes around the world.

Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto was the nephew and mechutan of the formidable kabbalist Rabbi Chaim Vital. His father married Rabbi Chaim Vital's sister, and for a time he settled in the Tzfas near his uncle Rabbi Chaim Vital. Later Rabbi Chaim’s son Rabbi Shmuel Vital married Rabbi Yoshiyahu’s daughter.
