Shaagas Aryeh. First Edition. Frankfurt an der Oder, 1756.

This sacred copy was gifted by the Shaagas Aryeh himself to the Rebbi of the Chasam Sofer Harav Yaakov Shamash, head of the Jewish community in Frankfurt.

Harav Yaakov Shamash’s inscription on the title page reads, “I, hakatan Yaakov Shamash received from the author himself, Hagaon Harav Av Beis Din and Rosh Mesivtah of the holy congregation of Metz when he visited this community on Sunday, 29 Tammuz, 5527 (1767)…”

In 1766, the Shaagas Aryeh was appointed Rav and Av Beis Din of Metz, and on his journey to the city, passed through the city of Frankfurt. Other records of this visit are found in Teshuvos Chasam Sofer (Yoreh Deah Ch. 70), where he relates: “I heard a question from my master and Rav Moreinu Harav Nosson Adler zt”l which was posed by the gaon the Shaagas Aryeh while passing through Frankfurt de Main…”

Harav Yaakov Shamash of Frankfurt was the Rav of the Kloiz and Rosh Yeshivah of Frankfurt in the era of the Baal Hafla’ah (1764-1785). He was a teacher and mentor of the Chasam Sofer who cites him frequently in his novellae on Shas and Torah, referring to him as “mori v’rabi.”

In his eulogy for Harav Yaakvov Shamash, the Ohr Chadash expressed: “In the month of Nissan, of year sheme”sh [1785], the sun departed and we received word from the holy congregation of Frankfurt de Main of the passing of the genius and leader of all dayanim…Moreinu Harav Yaakov Shamash. We grieve for the great sun of Torah and fear of heaven that was lost from the world, for the sun that set before its time.” (Chavas Yair Hachadash p.37b)
