Antique Watercolor / Gouache Painting Signed Picasso. The current owner and consignor of The Rose Period watercolor/gouache painting signed Pablo Picasso is a well renowned pottery, arts and antique collector and dealer in Central Florida for over 50 years. He purchased this item from his significant other on 8-14-2017. The previous owner was a direct descendant of President John Adams. She did acquire the art work from her parents’ estate with additional artwork that had hung in a Museum that were either donated or are not currently available for sell. The subject work can be described as gouache or watercolor painting on paper. The painting is attributed to Pablo Picasso, INDICATED by the signature on the lower-right. The composition reveals an image of two standing figures, male and female. The male is facing the viewer while the female has her back to the viewer. The figures are standing in an erect manner, with thin languid bodies and empty gazes. They each have an arm outstretched, as they make contact with one another. The surrounding environment is nondescript, as the ground is painted in a muted violet while the horizon is a muted, light blue. The style of figures’ dress resembles Picasso’s early paintings of Saltimbanques or acrobatic circus performers. Picasso was drawn to the nomadic circus families, who wore specific costumes marked by tight fabrics, bright colors, or diamond patterns. The male figure is in a dress more typical of an acrobat than the female, who is seen in a short dress, and tights. The young girl does however resemble a girl in the painting  “Family of Saltimbanques” who is also facing away from the viewer. The subject work can be compared to a number of works from the Blue And Rose Period, around 1905. The paintings and prints depict the slender circus figures, including young men in tight monochromatic clothing. While the figures in the subject work do resemble figures in known paintings, The subject work signature does say “Picasso” but the letters seem to be written over. The signature, therefore, does not have a fluid quality and is not as legible as comparable signatures, The subject work is not an original by Pablo Picasso. While the subject matter doesresemble images of the Saltimbanques from the Blue Period.
