Malki BaKodesh, with the signature of the Gaon our teacher, Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi Malki BaKodesh, Salonica, 1749. On the title page is the signature “the young man Yom Tov.” A comparison of this signature with other signatures reveals that this is the signature of the great Gaon Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi (1727-1802). His childhood friend, the Chid”a, called him “first in Torah, wondrous in piety and asceticism” and he became known by his acronym, the Marahi”t Algazi. He grew up in Jerusalem, where he studied Torah with Rabbi Yona Navon. The Marahi”t wrote his commentary, Hilchot Yom Tov, which earned him tremendous acclaim (the Chatam Sofer said of that composition that since the Mishne LaMelech, no composition was comparable to it until Hilchot Yom Tov).
