Collection of Documents and Letters Documenting the Establishment of "Ir Ganim" (Ramat Gan)
An album with a collection of paper items documenting the establishment of "Ir Ganim" (Garden City) - the first name given to Ramat Gan. The letters and documents in the album were presumably collected by architect Shmuel Dov Chaim Kris, one of the founders of the city. Tel-Aviv and Jaffa, 1920-1923.
Items include: • A printed notice (stenciled in red), announcing the first lottery of Ir Ganim land plots. • A statement for participants in the lottery (signed by Kris), 1922. • Invitation to a gathering in which the city's name and regulations will be determined. • Proposal for the regulations of Ir Ganim (two handwritten pages), determining the number of residents, the nature of management, financial matters and more. • Various name lists – participants in the land plot lottery and founders.
• 12 original receipts documenting the transfer of money from Kris to the Ir Ganim company (some of them on an official form of the Anglo-Palestine Company and some on various Ir Ganim forms). • And more. The name Ramat Gan appears on two letters, alongside the city's emblem (different than its present-day emblem).
Architect Shmuel Dov Chaim Kris (1892-1974) served in the Jewish Legion, was a member of the first Assembly of Representatives and a delegate to the 17th Zionist Congress. In his youth, he worked as a construction worker and took part in building the Achuzat Bayit houses of and the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium. These documents indicate that Kris was a member of the Migrash Ganim association, which united with Ir Ganim company in early 1920.
The items are mounted to album leaves (unbound album). Many documents on official stationery, bearing different stamps of "Ir Ganim" and hand-signed by the founders.
Approx. 50 items. Size and condition vary (album: approx. 28 cm.). Good overall condition. Stains, fold lines, filing holes and minor blemishes. Album without binding and spine, with stains and wear.
