Large Civil War Dated Hand-colored engraved Map Entitled Johnson's Kentucky and Tennessee, Johnson & Ward, First Edition Johnson & Ward Edition, 1862 | From Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas with Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) - A. J. Johnson & Ward edition, 1862) | Approx. 18" H x 26.25" W.This rare map offers a fascinating snapshot of Tennessee & Kentucky shortly following the outbreak of the American Civil War. Map shows both states in full with color coding according to county. Engraved views of the “State House Nashville”, the “Navy Yard Memphis”, and the “Entrance to the Mammoth Cave” decorate the upper left, lower left, and lower right hand corners of the map. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlases from 1860 to 1863. Published by A. J. Johnson and Ward as plate numbers 45 and 46 in the 1862 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas . This is the first edition of the Johnson’s Atlas to bear the Johnson & Ward imprint.Map Lists important TN and KY forts during the civil war, e.g. forts along the Mississippi River such as Fort Pillow, Fort Harris, Fort Randolf, Fort Wright, etc., and other forts and battle placements, e.g. Fort Henry, Fort Donelson.
